Shadow House – a best ‘Locked away’ murder mystery

Are you a crime fiction buff and a huge fan of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None? If so, you are exactly where you need to be. Today, I’m diving into a fantastic, fast-paced murder mystery that will make you want to finish it in one sitting; Sourabh Wagale’s Shadow House.

If you have read my earlier posts here on Book Nook by Adi, you already know how much I love Wagale’s Detective Alfa series. But trust me, you won’t mind him taking a brief hiatus from Alfa for this one. Shadow House is every bit as thrilling.

The Premise

A group of business associates and friends gather to celebrate New Year’s Eve in a secluded old mansion hidden deep within a dense Melghat forest. The party soon takes a macabre turn when the host is brutally murdered, triggering a chilling chain of events. Consequently, everyone is a suspect, and there is no way out. If you were invited to this party, it truly was an invitation to die. You have to read the book to find out who is orchestrating everything; and brace yourself, because there is an absolute killer of a twist at the very end!

My take

When an author has built a rich universe around a beloved lead investigator across multiple books, it’s often hard to break away and create a completely new cast. Nevertheless, Sourabh manages to hook us from the very first page. He makes these new characters come alive, complete with all their distinct traits, flaws, and insecurities. Even the ‘Shadow House’ itself; a secluded, ancient mansion in the Melghat Forest; takes on a life of its own, becoming a character in its own right with a deeply haunting aura.

The story flows seamlessly from scene to scene. The writing is crisp, relentlessly fast-paced, and packed with twists and turns. I fully intended to finish it in a single sitting, but eventually had to force myself to take a break just to get some sleep!

Should you read it?

This is a masterpiece that can best be described as: “What happens when the creator of Detective Alfa writes And Then There Were None.” You are definitely in for a twisty, gripping murder mystery.
